Rinat Dasayev: Soviet Union vs. Scotland, 1982

Rinat Dasayev is a Russian former Goalkeeper. Dasayev played in three World Cups for the Soviet national team. Dasayev is considered by many as the 2nd best Russian goalkeeper of all time behind only Lev Yashin.  Dasayev played most of his soccer at Spartak Moscow having previously played for Volgar Astrakhan; he finished his career at Spanish club Seville in 1991. Dasayev was awarded the title of 'World's Best Goalkeeper of the Year' in 1988 by the IFFHS (International Federation of Football History & Statistics).

In the 1982 World Cup the Soviet Union were drawn in the same group as Scotland. In this game that ended up 2-2, Dasayev produced one of the best saves of the World Cup. A ball in from a Scotland winger was powerfully headed towards goal by Joe Jordan. His header looked to be nestling into the bottom corner until Dasayev's lightning reactions depraved the centre-forward of a World Cup goal.
